I was inspired recently when I was reading about the work that Ed Miliband is doing with with Franny Armstrong. They are taking the message of Climate Change to as many people around the UK as possible and “Ed’s Pledge” for Greater Ambition on Climate Change is well worth supporting.
As I watched the video of EdandFranny and talking as they travel it made me think about how each of us can make a difference when we are on our travels too! You can also drop by EdandFranny‘s Live Blog!
There are definitely ways to travel that are cleaner. Here are some ideas on how to green up your travel.
1. Camp out instead of staying in a hotel. Hotels are very wasteful, as they generate a lot of trash and use large amounts of energy and water.
2. If you do stay in a hotel, choose it carefully. There are “green” hotels these days – they use LED lights, water-saving shower heads, low- or dual-flush toilets, and even alternative power such as solar.
3. Make your hotel stay less wasteful by shortening your showers and requesting that towels and linens not be washed every day. Bring your own toiletries and request that the hotel not stock (and re-stock) your room with these disposable items.
4. Take a train. Trains are the most eco-friendly mode of travel, followed by hybrid cars (you can rent one for your trip).
5. Avoid cruises, which are the most wasteful form of travel. Some people maintain that cruises are more wasteful than airplanes.
6. Visit sites of natural beauty where you can spend the day on foot, not driving around or otherwise using fossil fuels at your vacation site.
7. Look for eco-lodges, places to stay that are committed to the greenest possible business practices.
8. Eat organic, locally grown food at your destination. Not only is it healthier and more eco-friendly, it supports the local economy, too.
9. Cook your own food where you can, and take it with you when possible.
10. Use a bicycle for sight-seeing.
11. “Leave it like you found it” is a good mantra for clean travel. Make sure you recycle all waste possible and do not leave your trash lying around.
