In these tough economic times there is obviously a lot more pressure on your wallet and as a result you’ll want to watch what you’re spending your money on and put aside a little bit more each week for a rainy day. One way to that is by making changes in the way you live which, if we’re being honest, isn’t what any of us want to do, but once you give it a go can actually be quite a liberating experience.
The way to achieve this is by making a few tiny changes in the way you live across the board which can not only add up to a change that is significant over time but can also help you to ride out the recession with relative ease while also helping the environment.
Let’s take a look at one of the biggest expenses for any home, heating and electricity. If you knock all of your devices off instead of leaving them on standby the savings will quickly add up. So every time you go to bed, turn off the television properly and make sure all of the lights are off. If you have to buy any new appliances try and buy one with an off mode as well as a standby mode, that way you need not unplug them to save money. In terms of heating, try and turn the heating off during the day when you’re out, only coming on intermittently during the weekend so that you’re not heating up the house unnecessarily. And remember that there is nothing wrong with just putting a jumper on when it gets a little chilly, just think of what your ancestors would have done before the existence of the modern day creature comforts we take for granted today.
Another area you can look toward making savings on is in the kitchen. Recently we’ve seen a massive soar in the cost of branded goods as compared to bulk brands. As a result it makes a lot of financial sense to buy bulk brands because of their larger sizes which contain less packaging for the amount of food you get. This means overall less packaging to dispose of with less ending up in landfills and making a nuisance in the environment. You can also combine this effort with recycling more of your bottles and cans, both of which can often be returned to outlets for a cash rebate that might just give you a few extra dollars a week.
The same is true in the bathroom, there are plenty of stores with green initiatives that offer refills for your bottles if you take them in, not only does this reduce the amount of throwaway packaging which like everything else only ends up clogging our landfills, but it is far more cost effective than to buy a brand new bottle straight off the shelf. This is a great way to save money while at the same time being environmentally conscious.
So, there you have it, a few simple ways to make changes around the house which can provide a great financial incentive for pursuing a greener path.
